Goal (Terminal Objective):
Study the effect color has on designs. Introduce students to Andy Warhol lithographs and color schemes.
Objective:
Students will study various color combinations and how they can produce a different effect on the same subject. The principles and elements of design are applied with emphasis on color and composition.
National Standards:
Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 1: Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes
Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 3: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 5: Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics
Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 6: Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines (Social Studies Cross Curriculum Connection)
Purpose:
Students will draw a self-portrait and create a color study by painting it in eight different color schemes.
New Vocabulary:
Monochromatic, analogous, complementary colors, value, tints, shades, lithograph
Materials:
tag board, mirrors and tracing paper
#17-57xx Fluorescent Tempera Paint
#17-64-65xx Art-Time Tempera Paint
Time:
4-5 hours
Introduction and Motivation (Set):
Students will create a color study in the style of Andy Warhol’s lithographs.
Instruction:
- Introduce students to Andy Warhol’s lithographs. Discuss his use of color and how each print represents a different mood or idea. Use the website listed below to showexamples.
- Students should explore the different terms pertaining to color: monochromatic, analogous, complementary colors, value, tints, shades
- Experiment mixing all of the color combinations: shades, tints, and greyscale
- Students will draw a self-portrait on a 4”x6” piece ofpaper.
- Divide a 12”x18” piece of tag board into 8 sections. Trace their self-portrait in each 4”x6”section.
Paint each section in one of the following color schemes: (a.) each complementary color of the 3 primary colors, (b.) warm or coolcolor combination, (c.) split complementary colors, (d.) shades or tints and (e.) grey scale.

WarmColors
Activities:
(1) Guided Practice:
- Discuss color schemes and color theories: each complementary color of the 3 primary colors, warm or cool color combination, split complementary colors, shades or tints and greyscale
- Explore Andy Warhol’s lithographs explorewebsites.
- Draw and trace self-portrait.
- Practice mixingcolor
(2) Independent Practice and Check forUnderstanding:Student will know how to mix tints and shades and create one value of anycolor.
(3) Closure:Students will successfully complete 8 color schemes studies and relate it to Andy Warhol’s lithographprints.
Evaluation:
Level One — Student will successfully create a self-portrait with self-likeness. Eight color studies have been identified and painted. Excellent painting skills were shown. Facial features, highlights and shadows are well defined.
Level Two — Student successfully created a self-portrait that shows a similar self-likeness. Eight color schemes were used but not all of them are correct. Painting skills are above average but not original. The facial features are painted with only a few highlights and shadows.
Level Three — Student has painted a self-portrait with very little likeness. Eight color schemes are used but half are incorrect. Painting techniques are weak. Facial features are painted but messy.
Level Four — Students self-portrait shows no likeness. Less than half of the colors schemes are incorrect. Very poor painting skills are demonstrated on the facial features. No shadows or highlights are used.
Extension:
Explore various printing techniques or students can create a lithograph print in the style of Andy Warhol.
