Introduction and Motivation (Set):

The art instructor will give a brief introduction of prehistoric cave art. Some visuals should be shown from the resources below or from other sources. A discussion should take place about the simplicity and placement of the animals.

Instruction:

The teacher will demonstrate how to transfer the sketches on to the 9”x 12” paper, crumbling the paper and how to create a crayon resist.

Activities:

(1) Guided Practice:

  1. The students will draw a sketch of at least two different domestic animals, (they may draw a family pet or use a photograph from a magazine or internet). The sketch should be simple, using very littledetails.
  2. The students will transfer their sketches on a 9”x12” piece of construction paper. Then they will go over their pencil lines using Sargent Art’s Classic Fine or Broad Tip Markers (Don’t be concerned if markers run. This actually adds to the look of the painting by giving the animals a crisplook.).
  3. The students will transfer their sketches on a 9”x12” piece of construction paper. Then they will color them in using Sargent Art’s Premium Quality Oil Pastels, leaving some of the papershowing.
  4. The students will gently crumble their drawing into a ball being careful not to tearit.
  5. Then they will flatten theirdrawing.
  6. Next the students will apply a wash using Sargent Art’s Copper Metallic Tempera Paint (this will create a crayon resist) and let dry. To complete the project, the students
  7. will coat the painting using Sargent Art’s Acrylic Pearlescent MixingMedium.

(2) Independent Practice and Check forUnderstanding: The teacher needs to approve the original sketches of the domestic animals to insure theirsimplicity.

(3) Closure: The educator will hold a critique with the entire class discussing if the original criteria and objections weremet.

Evaluation:

Level One — The completed faux cave painting successfully met all the original objectives showing the student’s understanding of prehistoric cave art, showed creativity, was visually interesting, and was executed with quality and was exceptional.

Level Two — The completed faux cave painting successfully met all the original objectives showing the student’s understanding of prehistoric cave art, showed creativity, was visually interesting, and was executed with quality.

Level Three — The completed faux cave painting barely met all the original objectives, showed little understanding of prehistoric cave art, showed very little creativity, was not very visually interesting, and was not executed with quality.

Level Four — The completed faux cave painting did not meet the original objectives, it showed no understanding of prehistoric cave art, showed a lack of creativity, was not visually interesting, and lackedquality.

Tip:

A little of the product goes a long way.

Notes:

The corners of the painting may be accented with the metallic paint after the wash is applied.

Notes:

The teacher may choose to change the size of the paper used or have them work on a larger scale with a partner to create a mini cave art mural.
