Students will be able to create

PAINTING

Collographs

Target Group:6th grade

Goal (Terminal Objective):

Students will create collographs, demonstrating their understanding of printmaking and texture. Collography uses materials which are applied to a cardboard base plate and printed onto absorbent paper.

Objective:

Students will design and construct compositions from textured materials like string and yarn, burlap, sandpaper, crumpled foil. These objects will be attached to a sturdy 9″ X 12″ cardboard base with white glue. Students may also “draw” directly onto the cardboard with the glue.

National Standards:

Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 1: Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes

Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 2: Using knowledge of structures and functions

Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 3: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas

Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 4: Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures

Visual Arts Grades 9-12 Content Standard 5: Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others

Purpose:

Students will create images without traditional drawing media. Students will view and examine works from a variety of cultures. Students will create multiple impressions of their designs.

New Vocabulary:

texture, print, collograph

Materials:

Paint thinner, paper, examples of prints

#22-1207 16 oz. washable glue

#22-8801 Extra thick liquid Gesso

#22-8808 Acrylic Gloss & Varnish

#22-8815 Acrylic Matte Medium

#22-2016 24 ct. large size Oil Pastel

#32-2007 12 ct. Metallic Oil Pastel

#56-6012 12 ct. Natural Hair Rainbow Brush Assortment

Time:

This lesson may be modified to last from three to five hours, depending upon size and complexity expectations.

Introduction and Motivation (Set):

Students will view exemplars of prints from a variety of artists. The teacher will direct student attention to the use of texture in each example.

Instruction:

Teacher presents and discusses exemplars. Teacher organizes the classroom to facilitate students’ easy, orderly access to materials.

Activities:

(1) Guided Practice:

  1. Students reflect upon images provided by teacher.
  2. Students create thumbnail sketches for print designs.
  3. Students lay out design in pencil for final print on 9″ X 12″cardboard.
  4. Students glue textured materials to cardboard base, following their designs.
  5. Allow glue todry.
  6. Brush and even coat of Sargent Extra Thick Acrylic Gesso over the entire collage. Apply a second coat when dry.
  7. Coat the gessoed plate with a coat of Sargent Acrylic Gloss Medium or Matte Medium.
  8. When dry, students apply a heavy coat of color to the entire surface of the collograph plate, using a variety of Sargent Oil Pastelcolors.
  9. Brush paint thinner over the colored areas of the plate. Clean brush when moving from one color area to another.
  10. Carefully apply a sheet of absorbent paper to the plate. Place a sheet of protective paper over the absorbent paper.
  11. Apply gentle, firm pressure to the back of the paper surface. Be sure to cover the entire area of the plate.
  12. Check the quality of the impression by carefully peeling away one cornerof the print.
  13. When the impression is satisfactory, peel away the print and allow it to dry in a clean place.
  14. The plate may be reused for multiple prints in various colors.
  15. Oil pastels should be cleaned with paper towels and paint thinner. All other materials may be cleaned with soap and warmwater.
  16. The collograph plate itself may be wiped clean, coated with Sargent Acrylic Gloss Matte Medium and displayed.

(2) Independent Practice and Check for Understanding: Teacher approves students’ pencil collage designs that demonstrate the use of texture. Teacher circulates among the working students visually recording (checklist) students demonstrating understanding of objectives, asking direct questions when understanding isn’t observable, and asking peers to critique each other. Teacher helps and reinforces students as they work.

(3) Closure:Students display their work.

Evaluation:

Use teacher or class critiques to evaluate particularly strong works and strong qualities within works.
Level One — The finished print clearly and consistently uses texture as one of a multitude of design elements. The imagery and symbols are interesting, creative, and clear. The student used a variety of textured materials appropriately to create an interesting visual effect. The process was followed correctly. The use of color contributes to the overall success of the final product. Craftsmanship is excellent.

Level Two — The finished print clearly and consistently uses texture. The imagery and symbols are clear. The student used a variety of textured materials appropriately to create his design. The process was followed correctly. The use of color is appropriate. Craftsmanship is good.

Level Three — The finished print uses texture in a limited way. The imagery is not always clear. The student used textured materials to create his design. The process was followed correctly, although there may have been problems with some of the steps. The use of color does not contribute to the overall success of the final product. Craftsmanship is variable.

Level Four — The finished print does not effectively use texture. The imagery and symbols are unclear, difficult to delineate, or absent. The student used materials inappropriately. The process was not followed correctly. Craftsmanship is poor.

Extension:

Students can make multiple plates or editions of prints. Prints can be made for a specific purpose (eg.,posters, greeting cards). Students can be taught to cut mats to frame and display finished prints.
